Film Openings-Seven

My first opening sequence is the film Seven, released in 1995.
It is a film which focuses on two policemen, Brad Pitt acts as the newly recruited homiscidal detective and he works with detective Somerset who is played by Morgan Freeman. They are on a desperate hunt after a serial killer who is torturing and killing his victims by the ways of the Seven Deadly Sins.

The sequence opens to a dark bedroom, the only light is a side lamp next to the bed, it appears to be late at night as there is no daylight breaking through the curtains. The main character flicks an object which starts to make a ticking noise, this creates tension as it seems as though he is waiting for something to happen, and after watching other horror films, audience's recognise that this means something bad could happen. The camera starts to pan towards the actors face, and appears sleepy, the audience starts to question why he isn't asleep, maybe something is keeping him up? Closeups on the pendulum emphasises the time going by and that we are waiting for something to happen. Suddenly there is an abrupt blackout, this shows there is a change in time and place, it also shocks the audience and sets the mood for the eerie film ahead.
Dull colours are used to make the location look grotty and creepy, the credits are written in a font that has connotations of being in horror movies or a ghost movie, it starts to flicker which looks peculiar, making the audience feel uneasy. The quick, fast paced editing of the shots create an exciting yet nervous atmosphere, the audience can't take all of the information in and it makes some images stand out, for example the razor blade, this object is used in thrillers to remind viewers of blood, death and injuries. The squeaky sounds remind me of screaming or someone in pain, which portrays what the rest of the film is about, it really sets the audience up for the thriller that is ahead. Red flashes throughout the second part of the opening, this contrasts to the dull colours and emphasises the theme of blood. The enigma throughout is that you never see the characters face, it is a mystery to who is cutting up the old photos and fiddling with the razor blade, this makes the audience scared as we don't know who he is, the imagination runs wild with images of grotesque, sinister men.
The sequence flickers and there are lines over it as if it is was an old film, it also links to the photos and film is he cutting up, the theme is carried throughout, it makes the audience feel involved. The photos are sometimes gruesome, showing a man who has been tortured, it makes you wonder if it was him murdering and taking the pictures, or if the character has a twisted interest in the subject.
The pace of the shots and music increases creating a frightening, anxious atmosphere.
The third part of the opening, uses an establishing shot a city, the tall blocks of flats make it appear to be set in America and in a big city. There is a sign that says 'Monday' on, this gives the audience knowledge of the time, they know it's the beginning of the week.
