Synopsis
The newly recruited police officer, Detective Briggs, has just moved to the big city of New York, his first task is to try and catch a serial killer who is murdering all of the big business men over the city. However, it's a complicated murder mystery, especially for a rookie.
All the men have nothing in common, apart from one lady, the gold digger Miss Scarlet.
When Briggs discovers this he goes to question Miss Scarlet at her mansion, however the femme fatale seduces him and it all ends in tragedy.
Opening Synopsis
Titles
Close up of Detective Brigg's eyes, he's sweaty and alarmed. All the audience can hear is the sound of his heavy breathing.
Voiceover cuts in, and old frail voice says;
"New York, it's a dirty business, and you know you can try and but you can't save 'em all".
Flashback starts of a hand moving closer to a door, still breathing in background.
"Do you really want the nightmares..."
Close up of the hand on door,
"...you'll only ever see the worst in people?"
He slightly opens door.
Blackout.
"Don't go"
Sound of scream.
Wide shot of Detective Briggs sweating in bed, the blinds shadow on his face. Wife asleep next to him.
Editing
It will start at a slow pace, then as the hand is slowly reaching for the door, the pace of the shots with increase to create an anxious atmosphere.
Cinematography
The blinds shadowing on his face is a shot seen throughout a range of film noir's. The extreme closeups with add tension for the audience watching, the flashbacks will be shot as if the audience is the Detective Briggs, making them feel nervous and it will involve them in the film, gaining their attention during the sequence with is the main purpose of film openings. The wide shot will establish the room the characters are in and give the audience a feel for the location and setting.
Mes-en-scene
The sequence is set in his bedroom, the wide shot will reveal a double bed, a modern bedroom,white sheets on the bed and daylight breaking through the blinds. The room is quite tidy yet there are clothes on the floor, and a police uniform hanging on the cupboard.
Sound
The sound of a heartbeat increases until the blackout at the end of the shot, as the flashbacks start a piece of nervous piano music starts to add to the atmosphere. The voice over helps the audience understand what is happening, yet adds enigma.
